USA Italian Emancipation Day – June 23rd, 1874

Today I reflect on my forefathers who immigrated from Sicily. June 23rd was is Italian Freedom Day in the USA. A little know fact of slavery and human trafficking of Italians and Sicilians.

In 1874, Italian and Sicilian Slavery and Indentured Servitude was outlawed in the USA and particularly in cities such as: New York City & Cities in the Mid Atlantic. See: Padrone statute (18 Stat. 251)

As a proud Sicilian , this is one of the most little known and covered up crimes in US history with regard to human trafficking and slavery.  As for DNA, many Sicilians have DNA of Hispanic, Turkish, Greet, Arab, African and other regions.

SOPA Intellectual Property – Why We Should Protect Creators Authors and Inventors

Who Can Stop Online Piracy – George Mentz, JD, MBA

In the last few years, we have heard many politicians, companies and libertines talking about privacy rights and keeping the internet free and the protections of intellectual property.

Of course, every red blooded American wants to keep the internet open, collaborative, innovative, and even let the debates continue as it is part of our culture.

Overall, there is a big difference between “fair use” and mass piracy and counterfeiting. While the world is big, it is also getting smaller.  When you think about the ease of piracy with technology and the lack of enforceability, we are talking about billions if not trillions of dollars that is being stolen.  Now this money is not being exclusively stolen from Wall Street or Bill Gates, it is being hijacked from local: artists, programmers, musicians, and single mothers and so forth. People who are trying to put food on the table for their families.

Copyright infringement is illegal and so is trademark infringement.  We  should be protected whether  we have created a book, a song, poetry, essays, computer code, pictures, graphics, or other. The music industry survived in a slow conversion to downloading songs for a small but legitimate price.  The book world is going all digital, and hopefully writers will continue to be protected.  Also, the movie world is very dynamic with “on demand”.

However, you must consider that the world is 6 or 7 Billion people, and the USA is a tiny part of that with a meager 350 million or so consumers.  Thus, anyone offshore can  copy some great idea invented or created by a taxpaying citizen of one country and pirate it in other countries. Or, a former disgruntled employee can steal data, content, images, trade secrets and so forth, and sell it offshore and around the world from offshore locations. The bad news is that the major search providers and governments do not seem to have the money or the manpower to regulate or police all of the phony websites or search results, and different laws may apply in different countries.

In a perfect world, you would search Yahoo or Google or MSN and find the company that you are looking for.  However, there are times that you may search for a company and the most meaningful results are some imposter operation offshore that is counterfeiting, pirating, or selling goods which are either the same or confusingly similar to the authentic proprietor.

In the end, billions go down the drain, and the US government and the: states, cities, and counties suffer from losses in tax revenues.

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) if enacted could bar advertising networks and payment facilities from conducting business with infringing websites. This means that the big search engines could not include results with violations.  Presently, the DMCA copyright complaints may work to request that a search engine remove a copyright infringement, but it must be an obvious violation. Also, if you take something down, something else might pop up…

Overall, the SOPA is a key national and international debate.  It must be said that our laws must keep up with technology.  Additionally, there must be a way to protect artists, creative writers, teachers, researchers and inventors.

Here are some US laws, that are on the books but difficult to enforce.  The question is whether new laws will make it easier to stop piracy, trade secrets violations, and counterfeiting and the like.

The New Labor Union Paradigm – The New Productivity Theory

For most of my life, Unions have been the chief spokesman for many employees around the world. For 100 years, Unions have worked hard to provide safe working conditions and fair benefits for employees in any one country.

However, if you have taught Business 101, you would know that there are KEY STAKEHOLDERS with every Business. Here are the key players: Employees, Owners/Investors, the Community, the Customers, and the Suppliers. What the business books do not tell you is that the GOVERNMENT has become the Primary Stakeholder and obstacle to success, benefits, and global competitiveness.

My theory for the last decade is that the Unions have DONE THEIR WORK and there is little more to do internally because if ANY ONE STAKEHOLDER ASKS FOR TOO MUCH, THE BUSINESS GOES BANKRUPT.  This is because there is not just one uniform playing field of: country law, tax code, business regulation etc. Each company has its own HAVEN and sovereign laws.

Thus, the ONLY stakeholder in the USA that is LEFT to bargain with without going Bankrupt is the GOVERNMENT. Therefore, the unions CHIEF job in the 21century  is to bargain for fair or better treatment from the Government and less burdens, taxes, regulations and such.

That leaves us with the Trump Effect. This new strategy means that government leaders “top down” will work to facilitate a business friendly environment for: companies, employees, communities, buyers, suppliers and investors.

In sum, real leaders of unions and government will work to level the playing field for all local businesses and communities.

Trump Economics – Tax Reform SWOT Analysis – By George Mentz

Trump Economics – Tax Reform SWOT Analysis By George Mentz

Strengths and Opportunities – With a new tax system that applies to C-Corporations in the USA, many things can be affected. If you lower the progressive Corporate taxes, the company will have more revenue in their hands to spend.

At this time, corporate profits are taxed up to 39% before they can pay dividends or retain earnings.

If you lower that rate to 15-20 percent, you would make the USA a corporate tax haven which levels the playing field for many companies worldwide.

If a company has more money due to less taxes, what will the company do? Here are some options

  1. Hire People
  2. Pay employees more money.
  3. Spend it
  4. Invest in People Innovation Technology etc.
  5. Buy and Build things
  6. Buy other companies.
  7. Pay HIGHer dividends
  8. Grant more stock options
  9. Invest more in the community
  10. Provide greater benefits to employees.
  11. Retain more earnings for security.
  12. Grow, take risks, invest more money locally
  13. Repatriate more money from abroad.
  14. Move your headquarters or nerve center from another country into the USA.
  15. Compete better internationally.
  16. and many other ideas.

Many ideas come from thinking about these dynamic shifts. One option is that investors will hold onto great blue chip stocks knowing that they may be able to pay greater dividends too.

Weaknesses – Since the USA has the worst Corporate Tax Rates, the only weakness is that people will pay less corporate tax.  However, that should be offset by money circulation and sales/personal taxation revenues being boosted greatly.

Threats – A potential tax war around the world where countries compete to have the best business environment 🙂

Chuck Norris – A Great American and Author

If you have never read a book by the great Chuck Norris, you should try one.  While he is a Christian and mega celebrity, he comes from humble roots and was one of the first in America to bring Karate and Zen to the masses.

A Norris Quote:  “If you want to move successfully along the current of life, you must trust yourself and help yourself, which means giving yourself positive reinforcement. Never allow yourself to nurture negative thoughts. Think positively, plan, and do what has to be done. If you plant the right seed, it will grow into your destiny if you feed it and nurture it. The fruit will ripen in season. But waiting and hoping are not enough.: Good outcomes require good actions.”

Success Secrets of Pythagoras – 2600 Yr.Old – By G Mentz, JD MBA

An 8 Fold Path That is 2,600 Years Old ? Success Secrets of Pythagoras – The 12 Fold Path – By George Mentz, JD MBA

Recently, I came across a book called the Golden Verses of Pythagoras. The wisdom, virtues, and ethics of the Pythagoreans is profound as it is an authentic blend of Eastern and Western principles.

As stated by the renowned mystic Manly Hall: The most famous of the Pythagorean fragments are the Golden Verses, ascribed to Pythagoras himself. The Golden Verses contain a brief summary of the system of philosophy forming the basis of the educational doctrines of the Pythagoreans of Crotona, or, as it is also known, the Italic School. These verses open by counseling the reader to love God, venerate the great heroes, and respect the spirit guides and elemental body forces. They then urge man to think carefully and industriously concerning his daily life, and to prefer the treasures of the mind and soul to accumulations of earthly goods. The verses also promise man that if he will rise above his lower material nature and cultivate self-control, he will ultimately be acceptable in the sight of the gods, be reunited with them, and partake of their immortality.
Twelve Fold Path – With Pythagorean Golden Verse References

Right Action – Engage No Harm – Sec. 11. Do nothing evil, neither in the presence of others, nor privately; Sec. 13. Observe justice in thy actions and in thy words.

Right Regard – Love Yourself Like Your Destiny Depends On It – Sec. 12. But above all things respect thyself.

Right Planning – Sec. 27. Consult and deliberate before thou act, that thou mayest not commit foolish actions; Sec. 30. Never do anything which thou dost not understand.

Right Speech – Sec. 28. For it is the part of a miserable man to speak and to act without reflection.

Right Gratitude – Sec. 36. Avoid all things that will occasion envy. Sec. 44. And if thou has’t done any good, rejoice.

Right Moderation – Sec. 35. Accustom thyself to a way of living that is neat and decent without luxury. Sec. 9. Know that all these things are as I have told thee; and accustom thyself to overcome and vanquish these passions:–10. First gluttony, sloth, sensuality, and anger.

Right Reflection – Sec. 40. Never suffer sleep to close thy eyelids, after thy going to bed.; Sec. 41. Till thou hast examined by thy reason all thy actions of the day.

Right Forgiveness – Sec. 7. Avoid as much as possible hating thy friend for a slight fault.

Right Contemplation – Sec. 48. But never begin to set thy hand to any work, till thou hast first prayed the gods to accomplish what thou art going to begin. Sec. 45. Practise thoroughly all these things; meditate on them well; thou oughtest to love them with all thy heart.

Right View – Sec. 54. Thou wilt likewise know, that men draw upon themselves their own misfortunes voluntarily, and of their own free choice. Sec. 55. Unhappy that they are! They neither see nor understand that their good is near them.

Right Thinking – Sec. 21. There are among men many sorts of reasonings, good and bad; Sec. 22. Admire them not too easily, nor reject them. Sec. 23. But if falsehoods be advanced, hear them with mildness, and arm thyself with patience. Sec. 24. Observe well, on every occasion, what I am going to tell thee:–Sec. 25. Let no man either by his words, or by his deeds, ever seduce thee. Sec. 26. Nor entice thee to say or to do what is not profitable for thyself.. 68. Make a just distinction of them, and examine all things well.

Right Love and Wisdom – Sec. 5. Of all the rest of mankind, make him thy friend who distinguishes himself by his virtue. Sec. 18. Sextus – The foundation of piety is continence; but the summit of piety is the love of God.
Pythagoras of Samos (580 BC- 495BC) was an Ionian Greek philosopher, mathematician, and founder of the metaphysical-spiritual movement called Pythagoreanism. In the sixth century BC, Pherekydes of Syros, the reputed teacher of Pythagoras and contemporary of Thales and Anaximander (born 610 BC), wrote a book about the birth of the gods and the origin of the cosmos. Considered one of the first prose works of Greek literature, Pherekydes’ book survives only in fragments while the teachings of Pythagoras permeat all scientific and spiritual boundaries.

Benjamin Franklin was an author, a painter, an inventor, a father, a politician, and the first American Ambassador to France. He invented bifocals, swim flippers, lightening rods, and the Franklin stove. He founded a public library, a hospital, and insurance company and a fire department. He helped write the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. He wrote an autobiography in the middle of his life and shortly before his death in his 80’s, he completed his memoirs. Franklin was truly a Renaissance man. He was one of the greatest citizens and thinkers the world has ever seen. But Franklin was not always a great or successful man. At the age of 17 he ran away from home in Boston, estranged from his family because of an argument he had with his brother.

Franklin tried in business and failed, not once but twice. He was the father and single parent of an illegitimate son whose mother abandoned the child to Franklin unable and unwilling to live with Franklin and the child. As a young adult Franklin was by almost any measure and especially his own measure a dismal failure. His life was confused, difficult and not at all satisfying to Franklin or to anyone else. He decided to change.

Benjamin Franklin sat down and made a list. The list consisted of twelve characteristics, values and virtues to which he aspired. He called his list “Virtues”. Franklin’s list of virtues looked like this.
